WAHM Tip: Promoting Your Business With Class
Promote Your Services For FREE
You did notice the FREE in that heading, right?
With all the about.me promotions going around, there’s no doubt that you’ve heard about it.
But, are you using it to promote your blog or your business?
When I cracked open my box of business cards, I realized, shit, I added the about.me link but there’s nothing about me on that page. LOL
So I jam packed that sucker. Any way and every way there is to self promote with class – take it!
There are so many free tools out there to promote yourself and your blog or business. Utilize them! Twylah, Linkedin and about.me are 3 of my favorites at the moment.
Promoting via Social Media
Social Media, is of course, a great way to self promote. If you do it with class. If you can provide people with something they can find value in – a resource, a how to, a review – something you intimately know that others can benefit from, they’ll share that with their social media buddies. That’s promoting yourself through word of mouth. Not only is it classy, it’s the best kind of promotion you can get.
Another way to self promote via social media is to actually fill out your profiles. For instance, Linkedin now offers a section to list your skills. These “skills” are searchable keywords. Members can plug in a keyword in the search field and you can be on that list. That keyword may be a service you offer.
If you type WordPress Design into the search box and choose the Greater New York Area, I’m first on the list.
Also? Linkedin offers the option of portfolio app or a slide share on your profile. Or both! Hello? Show off your work, damnit. AND organize your profile, move those boxes around and place your portfolio and skills right below the main box.
Self Promote Without Class
Lately I’ve learned of people who’ve been using Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin to do the stupidest things to self promote. Here are 3 NO-Nos for you.
1. Do Not have an empty profile on twitter and then ask people why they haven’t followed you back. Why the hell should they follow you?
2.Do Not self promote on someone’s Facebook wall. Ya might as well crazy glue your bloody business card to their forehead while they’re sleeping.
3. Do not contact connections on Linkedin, asking that they introduce you to someone else on Linkedin without actually knowing something about your connection.
For example, a friend of mine is a designer. One of her new connections asked her to introduce them to so-and-so. When you do this, you’re also suppose to include a message for so-and-so.
This guy’s message was to offer his services as a designer to my friend’s connection. He’s her competition and he wants her to introduce him to someone who could be her client. Now I doubt he intentionally wanted to look like a jackass.
The reality of it is, he didn’t read her profile. He didn’t care about her profile. She was just someone to build his connections and then use to promote his services.
Opportunities to self promote are aplenty!
Be smart my peeps. There are lots of ways to promote yourself, for FREE. Utilize each and every. Don’t miss out on an opportunity.
Please share this post so other WAHMs and entreprenuers can benefit.

All was good until we got to NO-NO #2… I just did that 2day!!! In my defense, I only did it to a select few that regularly push my stuff out on other networks…

aww, but the question is, did you ask for permission first? some don’t care, some will let it go, some will be pissed at you but not say anything and some may just disconnect from you. It’s definitely important to ask first. Someone liked my page the under day and without evening saying hi promoted their blog on my wall. so i blocked her and marked her as a spammer.
I am putting you on my favorites list. I just started this last June, and I still feel like I’m falling off the learning curve. I’m slowly learning, but I’m getting frustrated too.
I’m gonna put your button on my site so you’ll be the first!
Thanks so much for the info I definitely will be back.
