When You’re Told It’s Ok To Steal From Another Blogger

So I am SUPER BLOODY PISSED OFF RIGHT NOW.

At the 1:57 mark of this video, you’ll learn why I am super pissed.

If you watch the video from the beginning you’ll learn that this woman states that her method of monetizing her blog is “something so simple that others overlook it”.

0 When Youre Told Its Ok To Steal From Another Blogger

It’s not that it’s overlooked, it’s that it’s wrong.

It’s really bloody wrong.

You don’t steal from other writers.

You know I checked the date of that post to see if it was just an old school way of doing things. Would you believe it was published April 2012?

At the 3:25 mark, she actually says “without having to think about it, without having to write it yourself”.

And Google will bitch slap you into next week for doing this too.

What saddens me is that in the post of the video at http://amystarrallen.com/how-to-create-viral-content-on-your-blog-without-seo, a blogger that i know and respected cheers this woman on.

And what saddens me even more is that people are falling for this crap.

They’re told it’s ok.

Guess what, you can give me credit, you can shower me with comments, you can link to every single damn page on my blog, and it’s STILL NOT ENOUGH.

Nothing, NOTHING you do will make it OK to steal content that I put my time into writing.

stealing on flickr continues 264x300 When Youre Told Its Ok To Steal From Another BloggerAnd yes, I may never have a trending post that you want to copy, but what makes you think a popular blogger will want you to copy and paste their words? Why would they want your measly link back to their blog?

Even when I had affiliate sites, I never stole from another writer. Sure I was running on even less sleep than I do now, but I wasn’t going to steal from anyone.

I search engine optimize my youtube videos and add a description that includes a link to my blog, so I don’t mind it being shared. That’s why it’s marked public. But don’t you dare copy and paste my words.

Did I mention I am SUPER PISSED, so I’m going to end this post and head back to writing my ebook.

Oh and before I go, here are a few free plugins that turn off the option to right click and copy anything from your blog. I no longer use them myself because I’ve written posts with code and long link lists users can copy, but these plugins are great at protecting your blog posts.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the methods mentioned in this video.

Go ahead and RANT I am listening.

and please refrain from calling the woman names. as pissed as i am at her tactics i don’t think it’s kind to insult her personally by name calling.

  1. Super confused my SEO guru. (totally not sarcastic, I freaking hate keeping up with SEO) But why is it bad to embed a video to your post?

Her wording is super poor but I got out of it to embed videos which is what you did here and I do periodically. Especially if I know I can write text with the video that has an affiliate link to it.

Maybe I shut her out after the first mark you said…it probably happened as I’m not a video fan I get sidetracked. But before that I didn’t hear the stealing content or I’d be all up and down your bandwagon. I HATE content thieves! After over 10 years online I really, really hate them.

Ok, scratch that. I’m watching a second time. Before 2 minutes she is already saying ANYWHERE you can get content.

K, full force behind you, this is stealing. Not only stealing but she’s going to make money from the powernetworked blogs that sign up. She’s 100% dirty promoting. What a —–.

It’s plenty ok to embed youtube videos, it’s why they are there. IT’S NOT OK to steal videos from people’s sites or to steal their articles. In fact it’s why so many of us have google alerts and other avenues set up to hit us when our articles post. See, we can find out if you steal from us quite easily. You make it even easier since you are too damn lazy to even change a title. That’s how lazy software works, it pulls directly.

So sorry, I worked it out and listened the second time V :) I know you will forgive me for being a skimmer at 4am lol Val

    • it’s not bad to embed a video. i’m pissed about the copy and paste from anywhere thing. as for videos, youtube gives you the option to mark videos private, so if the creator doesn’t want it shared, they can choose this option and there won’t be an embed code. is it even possible to steal non-youtube videos?
it’s ok girl. I know how that lack of sleep can screw with me. lol.

  2. OMG! What a —–! I can’t believe she would even go on video to say this crap. But then again, she’s making this video go viral isn’t she. Still, I’d like to bitch slap he. That’s just RUDE! Glad I enabled “no right click” on my blog!

    • it did get several views and i guess the people within the empoweredwhatever network are “learning” from it. it pisses me off that they’re investing their money and getting shot in the foot from the beginning, but they’re adults and should have a sense of right and wrong, right?

  3. Wow. I can’t watch the video right now (and I will), but I HATE content thieves. People who scrape content together and throw it on their sites and pass it off on their own, just make me sick. I came across one such person once, and I went through ALL her posts and found who she stole from, and emailed each blogger and told them about it. I felt so good after that.

Gah, people like that really piss me off.

    • there’s actually two pretty popular mom bloggers who started a joint business site and i noticed that every two days after i wrote a seo/google/social media post, they’d have a similar post up. i thought i was crazy. so i had other bloggers check it our for me and they agreed. i had actually stopped posting for a while because of it. then one day i just stopped letting others stunt my need to post and started again. it pisses me off but it’s BS we have to put up with from lazy bloggers.

  4. It’s ok to be *inspired* by another blog’s content. Downright stealing is not done. It’s not illegal or anything, but just not right. If people start stealing your content, whaddaya do? Nothing, nada, zilch. If Google’s sputtering ‘Double Content”. I have been wondering about this for a little while. HOW does Google determine who put their post on the internet first.
Give credit where credit is due. If you get complains so be it.

    • i timestamp my sitemap. according to cutts, they try to find who published the content first. so i timestamp my content and submit sitemap and submit my new links often. i’ve had my content scraped a lot, i’ve goten to the point where i just cant bother with it. i just don’t appreciate it when people are teaching others to do it like it’s a good thing

      • Got ya!
When you look at it in a positive way it could be seen as ‘flattering’.
But you’re so right. If one pretends to be a expert in the field (as in the vid) and gives people the *advice* to steal, that’s just wrong!

  5. “Inspired” is the word they use. :-) A euphemism for “stealing”

Incidentally, “content curation” is big business and highly recommended for successful SEO. There are people offering courses on this :)

Personally, I do not prefer to pass someone else’s stuff off as my own. But I confess to quoting people with due credit when it is very relevant to what I am writing.

Telling the world it is okay to copy is a different ballgame altogether. Grrr.

    • quotes are cool girl. i don’t mind ‘em at all. i mean how long is a quote? it’s just part of content you’re writing. but this copy and paste someone else’s hardwork and pay them with a simple “written by” and giving them a link is bullshit.
Vanita Cyril recently posted..When You’re Told It’s Ok To Steal From Another BloggerMy Profile

  6. Oh man….This has ‘BADBADBAD’ written ALL over it o.O

Seriously, ‘YOUR’ content won’t go viral like she says, THEY’RE content (whomever you’re stealing from) will; so basically, you’re just helping someone else with their content. Wouldn’t you want your OWN stuff to go viral? I just don’t understand who would think this is okay.

Yeah, there’s a link back and whatever, but that’s okay for a single quote-MAYBE a bio, but not for a whole damn post!

  7. YUCK!!! No way!!!

I can see sharing a video and adding your own commentary or using a quote form an article or another blogger.

There is a blogger blog out there that scraped my entire Artists Way Toolkit review post, illustration and all. I haven’t done anything about it just in case they are bad people and might do something worse.

    • girl i’ve had a lot of my content scraped. i got tired of fighting so i started timestamping my sitemap to make sure at least i don’t get slapped for duplicate content

  8. Wow! Is she serious? This is horrible. I get that many want to make money from their blog, but I think with blogging as with anything else, there are no shortcuts. You have to work hard to get money. You have to create great content yourself! Thank you for sharing this! I really hope no one takes her advice seriously. Wow.

    • i’m just hoping all these mom bloggers trying to get other mom bloggers to sign up for empowered network aren’t spouting the same crap.

  9. I actually took down half of my website one time because I was so angry about having my words taken — word for word, no edits, nothing, just a direct copy & paste — and the person who did it didn’t even have the courtesy to give me a link back, let alone mention that they were my words.

Worse, though, was the fact that they had 50 and 60 comments per entry with people praising their insight and their clever words. And they were all MINE. You know how I found out about it? A friend who knew they were my words stumbled upon (literally actually, they were using stumble upon!) the other site and called me immediately.

Plagiarism sucks. There’s never an excuse for it. EVER. If you want to quote someone, quote a little of it, not the whole thing. Be certain to give them attribution and make it prominent. And provide a link to the full post on the author’s site so they can go read it there.

    • there’s the kicker honey. this woman, and many of the people a part of her network, feel that since they’re “doing so well in the search engine results” – when in fact it’s empowered network that is – they’ve been taught it’s okay to do this and that they are helping the person out by giving them a link from their high ranking network. it’s really a black hat version of blogspot

  10. This is great! Steal! Yes! Woo-hoo! Do exactly as the gurus say!
    THE MORE MISTAKES YOU MAKE
    THE HIGHER MY BLOG RISES
    THE MORE CREDIBILITY I HAVE
and I AM A ZOMBIE looking for a good time – at YOUR EXPENSE

Now, get out there and STEAL AWAY!
Dave Lucas recently posted..Puzzled by a tweet! My Profile

    • Dave…you did notice that I’m not endorsing the stealing…right?

      • I know you’re not – but I AM – I WANT THEM TO STEAL so Google will wipe them out – every one that falls my blog rises a little bit higher!

    • lol ever tried googling ” empower network scam”? you’ll get 50maillionbazillion bideos on the same subject from their own affiliates. it’s like a memo was sent out for everyone to create the video to flood someone else out of the SERPS

  11. Spilled my coffee!!!

One thing is to do it yourself (and no, that’s not okay either). But telling others to do so in a public blog post! Grrrr …!

    • Michael, when I first saw the video, I didn’t know of EN and I wondered if this woman was actual hired as some type of trainer and was actually getting paid to teach people SEM. And I’m thinking, at the very least, this woman is going to get people bitch slapped by Google for duplicate content. Then I realized there’s a whole bloody network of them creating videos like this. I think she’s actually been trained that it’s OK. And the need to make money has more priority over having morals.

      • I looked at the 3 plugin’s you mention. The first one is by far the best, in my opinion. But ShareThis does a great job on its own, protecting your content. (http://sharethis.com)

  12. Thanks for saying this. I regularly go on the internet and search for sites that have stolen my articles in their entirety in order to do this. They put the link back and my name on the bottom as if that somehow makes up for the fact that they’re stealing from me and keeping the traffic away from the person who put in the sweat to create it. I write four columns in order to stay home with my 5 kids and I get paid a really measly amount of money for the work I put in, but I’ve managed to keep it up well enough to get by. When they copy and paste it into their web sites I don’t even get that. I wrote an article about ways to detox radiation after the Japan disaster and I couldn’t believe how many big sites that should know better copied my entire article onto their sites. They got tens of thousands of hits off of my hard work in compiling all of that information. That’s happened with every article I’ve ever written that went viral.

Not nice. Not good. Really, really obnoxious.

    Stealing = bad. Enough said.

    • Alicia, loved your post on high protein plants. I have periods of fasting where I can’t eat meat and fish and finding your complete list was just awesome. I suggest installing a copyright protection plugin and making sure your feed is a summary so your feed can not be scraped.
Some people just have too much balls girl. So much so that they believe they’re above copyright laws. by the way if you’re not signed up with a copyright service be sure to check out http://www.myfreecopyright.com/
