Why I Became A WAHM Through Pictures Reason 1

Yesterday

Early in the day. Way before bedtime to avoid a late night from sugar. Just me and the kids. Just awesome.

My Boy Turns 3

This has to be my favorite

Ok, this one too

My first weeks of being a WAHM

The Working Mom

Challenges ahead sign WAHMI’ve been a working mom for 14 years. True, I’ve worked longer than that, but my oldest is almost 15.

During those 14 years I’ve missed quite a lot.

  • Vanessa’s first recitation of the alphabet.
  • The first time Sabrina sat up.
  • Sabrina’s first time crawling.
  •  Vanessa’s first ice cream cone.
  • Chaperoning school trips.
  • Daily convos on the way home from school.
  • Several award ceremonies.
  • Damian’s “Firsts” until the age of 2.
  • The first time Natasha crawled.
  • And, sadly, many others.

I use to envy stay-at-home-moms. Especially the one that were able to work from home.

Now? Now I envy those moms who successfully work from home.

The WAHM

Don’t be envious. Not in the least. These first weeks working from home HAS NOT been filled with “make my own hours” or”play with the kids when I want and work when I want”. Not at all.

Starting your own business from home is very much like starting any business. Long bloody hours.

I’ve spent a lot of time in this little home office of mine. So much so that I want to install a mini fridge, a coffee maker and a toilet. One of my clients produces custom digital wallpaper and I’m thinking of finding something scenic from Fotolia.com and asking my client’s shop to print the sucker for me. I’ll have the illusion of a bigger room and something prettier to gaze at than these four walls when the wheels are turning in my head.

5 Career Resources For Moms Returning To Work

5 career resources for return to work momIn October, after I lost my job, I shared 8 Job Hunting Sites For The Out-of-Work Mom. These were the sites I planned to utilize in my job hunt. I’m still utilizing them. There’s been a few leads. On the very few interviews I’ve had, I came across and chatted with quite a few people. Of these people, I met three moms who were interviewing for different positions. Accounting, administrative assistant and office management. Each at different interviews. Two of the moms had children who were at an age where mom could return to work (one’s hubby was forcing her and the other was loosing her PA) and the other mom’s hubby had lost his job and both her and her husband were looking for new jobs to supplement his huge lost income, (due to the company he worked for going bankrupt). It was really taking a toll on her. She was missing her two sets of twins sitting in daycare.

It’s hard to be a mom of four who’s recently lost her job in a screwy economy. It’s even harder to be a mom who hasn’t worked in years and is now forced to enter the workforce in a screwy economy. I suggested my 8 job sites to each of the moms, who weren’t really internet/social media savvy, but now I wished I had reached out further by exchanging email addresses, because now that I’ve researched it, I’ve found a handful of sites that I would have recommended to them. The email would have gone like this:

So I was officially laid off yesterday. Yeah, I got axed. But it’s OK, everything happens for a reason. We’re going to be fine. I’ll be reviewing the job boards come Monday morning. I’m just going to chill this weekend. There’s quite a few places to look, so I figured I’d share a few of the lesser known in the event there were other out of work moms that were sick of Monster and Craigslist and their local paper.

Linkedin Job Boards
I’ve had a profile there for a while now and have about a 100 contacts to bug for leads.
A lot of people know about LinkedIn but did you know there are also quite a few recruiters that are members who are open to you contacting them. Be sure to join forums too, because you’ll find jobs listed in the forums that you won’t find on the general board, or at least I have.

Style Careers
Positions in the fashion industry. Accounting, advertising, marketing, planning, purchasing, photography, engineering, manufacturing and a host of others.

Creative Hotlist
Positions in the imaging industry.

Indeed.com
A search engine for jobs, allowing job seekers to find jobs posted on thousands of company career sites and job boards.

Career Journal
The WSJ’s career website.

Six Figure Jobs
It’s a premiere executive career community / job board that offers relevant online job search resources and content for $100k+ job seekers and recruiters. Probably out of my league, but hey, you never know.

True Careers
Job board for professionals with degrees.

Simply Hired
Another search engine for jobs, similar to Indeed.

So there’s my list. If you have any sites to suggest, please do. Good luck to those hunting too.
