Bitten By The Twitter Bug

Twitter Seduction

It wasn’t love at first site. Not at all. The first time we hooked up, it was through my old buddy Linkedin. There was an emptiness [in my profile] that needed to be filled. So I submitted. Did some stalking, got stalked a bit and after 3 weeks I got bored. Came across Facebook, Liked it a lot and it was bye bye birdie.

Fast forward, one year later. I hit the blogging scene, again after a 5 year absence. This time around I’m hanging with the mom bloggers (completely different from my old crew – the pissed off ex-wives of cheating bastards). Not only do these women share passionate tales from their lives and helpful tips that’s got me hooked, they offer ways to engage other than the comments section. I’m seduced back to Twitter, where I can find instant gratification from tweeting with people who’ve made an impression on me. Moms that I’m interested in chatting with. Through their tweets and retweets, I’ve found other interesting people to follow, with blogs that I can’t stay away from. And yes, I swing both ways now. Following the dads too.

Scott Stratten, the president of Un-Marketing and author of “UnMarketing: Stop Marketing. Start Engaging” (great book on social media and marketing, btw), describes Twitter as being “a current chat”. I have to agree. Am I saying it’s one big chat room like the ones found on AIM or Yahoo? Not necessarily, at least not based on my experience.

My very early years in chat rooms taught me not everyone is what they seem. True, I came across a lot of cool chatters, debated about music and movies and soccer. These were conversations that came and went. I knew nothing about this people. I didn’t know if we could relate, if they could make me laugh past the present moment  or if there was something I could learn from them or help them with. And I didn’t really care. They were one night stands. But times have changed, I’ve changed, and I’m looking for more.

What Twitter Is For Me

For me, Twitter is so much more than a chat room because the people I choose to follow, that I choose to chat with are those that offer content that I can enjoy, relate to and learn from. And for me, personally, it’s a prerequisite to me following you. If you follow me first, you can bet your ass, before I follow back, I’ll check out your profile, look for your URL and check out your site first. I wanna know that we can click.

  • A place to engage with people that I find interesting.
  • A place to share what I know and what others know that you may find interesting because I did.
  • A place to build relationships with colleagues (parent, blogger).
  • A place to gain valuable advice from experts.

What Twitter isn’t for me.

  • A numbers game (though I find my Klout score encouraging), played by posting quotes all they long and never actually chatting with anyone.
  • A place to shove me and my posts down your throats every single moment of the day.
  • A place to shove advertisements down your throat every single moment of the day, for money.
  • A place to promote posts I’ve never read or haven’t found interesting or helpful, for money.

So, I’ve been bitten by the Twitter Bug. Have you? Or are you just not feeling it? My facebook page is actually suffering now because of it. Are you able to maintain both?

Love this post! Although I sometimes feel that I’m following way too many people that sometimes I get lost hahaha. I do cherish our chat times on twitter, V!

I have a love/hate relationship with Twitter. I can’t seem to remain on it consistently enough to actually chat with people. A few times a year something happens and I’m on it nonstop for a month, but eventually I abandon it again.

i totally hear you! it’s the life of a busy working mama! one of the reasons I love it is having updates on new posts show up in my stream. i mean, twitter can get downright boring, but it’s a good resource for hot topics when you’re following the right people.

Oh my gosh, love this! My issue is that because of my work, I really don’t get to follow twitter during the day…and so I tend to feel like I am barely treading water in the twitter waters by the time I get to try to check in. It makes it hard to interact when I can be there for a quick lunch break, but not again till nightime.

  • I’ve been bitten by the twitter bug, too. It took me forever to “get it”, but I love it!

Great post girl! Very true to all you said, I can’t tell you how many people I know who just use Twitter as a place to advertise themselves and contests rather than actually socialize.

socializing, at least to me, is the key. i mean, if i see a tweet about an interesting contest, service, article, then yes, i’m going to visit that link. but, if we’re following each other, and that’s all you tweet and not even respond back hen i respond to your tweet, then more than likely, i’m going to unfollow. not to spite anyone, just because i feel there’s no point in following people on twitter if they’re not approachable.

But seriously, I remember coming by before, recently, and I do remember your site. (i tend to blog hop a lot from my iphone) You’ve got great articles up.

I tried twitter also and didn’t really get into. Maybe I should give it another chance.

    • Vanita says:

      Hey Con! I’ve missed you!
Ya know, when I used it the first time I was just looking to connect with ppl in our industry. But even though that is an advantage, I went about it the wrong way. I think we all do on our first try. Go for it again, and keep in mind, mama-to-be, there are a lot of great 1st time moms sharing their experiences for other moms to learn from. He’ll, just the other day I threw a Q out there on potty training Damian and got great advice.

Thanks! Erin created the laptop with the birdie. I love that birdie. She actually created a header with an illustration of me, but the app I used to create the theme doesn’t accommodate a header size big enough for her design. I am so bummed. You know how awesome her designs are.

Love this post! I totally agree with you on twitter. It’s so much more than a chat room. It’s how I met you and many other fab ladies I enjoy engaging with on a daily basis! I joined twitter in March 2009 and then got bored and left. Once I had my son, I joined up again and now I really enjoy it. It’s great to interact with people all over the world. I learn, I laugh and most of all I meet fab people like you! :-)
